I have only just started this area, prompted by a problem in my first grade classroom of breaking pencils, damaged books and materials etc. Of course six year olds are less capable of handling things carefully than older children with better fine motor control, but it did seem to me that there was a lack of interest in taking care of shared items.
There are some academic texts about teaching social responsibility that are reasonably easy to find, but they tend to be about broader issues of the environment, etc. - I wanted to focus a little closer initially.
Scholastic has a page on Activities for Teaching Responsibility with some good ideas for grades 1-2. I particularly like the way this page separates ideas into topics like "Interpersonal Responsibility, Community Responsibility, etc.
There is a "Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility" model where responsibility is taught through physical activity - read more at the TPSR Alliance website.
